UK Business Leaders Health and Wellbeing Study 2023: Full Report

The full report of The Dawn's nationwide survey of 1,000 senior UK professionals on work stress, burnout, mental health and substance use.

Key points

  • 1,000 UK professionals in senior roles earning £75,000 or more a year were surveyed
  • 54% reported regular anxiety and panic attacks, and 47% physical symptoms of work stress such as palpitations and headaches
  • Three quarters reported depression, including 34% with severe depression
  • 35% reported problems with alcohol, rising to 47% of those earning £200,000 or more
  • 87% said work-related issues had harmed their personal life, and 41% that they had led to the breakdown of a relationship
  • 85% had sought help from a GP or healthcare professional, but 19% had told no one else

Around a third of The Dawn’s UK clients are senior executives, professionals and business owners seeking help with burnout, addiction and other mental health conditions. To understand the toll a high-pressure career takes, The Dawn commissioned a UK-wide survey of 1,000 people in senior roles – including C-level executives, chairpersons and managing directors – earning £75,000 a year or more. The survey was carried out by Pollfish.

What is in the report

  • Mental health: anxiety, panic attacks, depression, exhaustion and physical symptoms of stress
  • Alcohol, recreational drug use and other ways of coping with work stress, such as gambling, overeating and shopping
  • The impact of work on relationships and life outside work
  • Whether and how executives seek help – and why many keep their problems to themselves
  • Advice from a Senior Psychotherapist at The Dawn on recognising the signs of burnout and what to do next

The highlights are summarised on the UK Professionals Mental Health Study 2023 page, and the question-by-question results are available as survey data tables. If work stress is affecting your health, read about The Dawn’s burnout recovery programme.
