How Our Mental Health Retreat Works
When you have reached a point where you can no longer manage the demands of daily life, our inpatient programme provides the intensive, round-the-clock support that outpatient treatment cannot offer.
We recognise that all mental health conditions stem from a combination of trauma and adverse life experiences that have left you feeling overwhelmed and unable to cope. Unlike weekly therapy sessions or medication adjustments that have not given you the breakthrough you need, our immersive environment allows us to address both your immediate symptoms and their root causes, ensuring genuine healing rather than temporary relief.
Upon arrival, you will receive a personalised treatment plan structured around our Treatment Roadmap, which guides you through progressive phases that stabilise your condition, help you develop effective coping strategies, and prepare you for a confident return to daily life. In our calming environment, far away from people, places, and situations that contribute to your condition, you will find the intensive support and expert care needed to break free from your mental health crisis and build the stable, fulfilling life you deserve.

If you feel like your life has fallen apart and you can’t see a way out, I’ve been there too. My work, relationships, and mental health collapsed all at once, and I fell into severe depression, crying every day, isolating myself, and feeling completely lost. In that desperation I searched for a way out. That’s when I started looking online and calling different places and eventually found The Dawn Thailand in Chiang Mai. The first time on the phone call, I spent more than an hour crying while sharing what was happening to me. Instead of judgment, I was met with deep understanding. I received a space that held my tears and gave me something I hadn’t felt in a long time, here is a safe place to say, “I’m not okay”. During almost two months in the Wellness Enhancement & Rehab Program, the experienced therapists and team designed a treatment plan that truly fit who I am and helped me untangle the knots in my life carefully. For safety reasons, there are the support team & the nurse on duty at all times. The Dawn could be a refuge - a trusted place, a gentle shaded road where the environment itself. No need to run, walk more slowly & strongly. My mental state improving step by step and my mind grows lighter. If you’re reading my life journey and searching for a way out. The Dawn Thailand became a safe home for me >> a place I could trust when everything else felt overwhelming. It might become that place for you too. You’re not alone !+1Posted on Google![]()

I can say without a shadow of a doubt that selling my car to fund my time at The Dawn was the absolute best decision of my entire life. Healing is rarely ever supposed to be comfortable. In a community setting like this, you will run into every type of personality that exists in the outside world, often in its most extreme form. Other clients will complain, and the process will feel incredibly challenging at times. But there is a profound, undeniable healing that happens through authentic connection. Here, I learned to get used to discomfort, to finally speak aloud the things heavily tied to guilt, shame, anxiety, and fear. I learned that it is okay to say the wrong thing, and that true growth happens when you allow yourself to drop the mask and be seen. The staff and doctors here are elite professionals who intimately understand the mechanics of trauma: Robert, my focus therapist, is genuinely the best therapist I have ever had in my entire life. Helen, the clinical director, proved to be not only an exceptionally skilled practitioner in the healing process during our brief talks, but also an avid, inspiring leader. The entire staff, from the nurses to the support team, is incredibly polite, compassionate, and professional. In two months, I did not encounter a single person who showed attitude or didn't want to be here. I chose the Viva package (off-site residence) for two months, though due to renovations, I spent the first six weeks on-site. While the Viva accommodations are perfectly good enough to get the job done, staying on-site is incredibly useful because it gives you immediate access to professional help, nurses, and medications at odd hours of the night. Furthermore, being on-site allowed me to utilize the amenities, like the gym and the piano, for an extra two hours a day, which is surprisingly worth it. Every single aspect of the programming is intentionally tailored toward mental health and nervous system regulation. The activities, including TRE (Trauma Releasing Exercises), sound healing, massage, yoga, and Muay Thai kickboxing, are purposeful. Even the food is scientifically part of the narrative. Having studied nutrition for mood stability myself, I immediately noticed the intentional inclusion of beets, pumpkin seeds, and dried apricots. Furthermore, when the intense "cycle" of processing trauma triggered massive cravings for carbohydrates and chocolate, I was incredibly grateful that the dining room always had cookies and snacks on hand, and that the store had plenty of treats to help. If you are considering coming here for trauma, I HIGHLY recommend booking 56 days over 28. That extension grants you access to the specialized trauma group. You absolutely need those first 28 days in the regular groups just to stabilize, understand the process, and learn how the community works before diving into the deepest layers of your past. I thought I learned everything I needed until I entered the second group, and I couldn't believe how much deeper the path of connection and acceptance could go. It may not feel comfortable every day, but please trust that this place knows exactly what they are doing. I am leaving with a sense of groundedness I didn't think was possible, and I cannot wait to see where life takes me from here. — Joseph+13Posted on Google![]()

I chose the Dawn after much research looking for rehabs that offered more than the 12 step approach which simply had not worked for me... I chose the Dawn because it offered help with trauma recovery and mental health in general, and because there was a Buddhist approach as well as the 12 steps. I needed more, and this place seemed to have it. As well, the cost was far less than rehabs in Canada; the final deciding factor was my phone interview with Helen- she got it. She was entirely present, compassionate and wise. I felt safe. I spent 2 months at the Dawn from April - May 2025. The short version is that the experience was life-changing. Not only did I get excellent daily care that included body, mind/emotions and spirit, but I finally started working on the trauma I had held all my life. The food was amazing! The locale was beautiful, the gym was awesome and the weekly Thai massages were the best I've ever had. The counsellors and staff were all absolutely professional, knowledgeable, skillfull, present and compassionate. After years of mental health treatments here in Canada and having been to two rehabs before, at the Dawn I got the best mental health and addiction care I have ever had. I am 65 years old, so I'd been struggling with trauma, depression and addiction for a long long time. Not only that, but there is an aftercare program that is for life! I meet with a therapist run group once a week ( they are offered 2X a week to accommodate different time zones) and I meet with other clients in WhatsAp any time I need to. I really can't say enough about the Dawn.Posted on Google![]()

My friend came to The Dawn about 2 months ago for treatment for depression and anxiety, and I’ve seen such a difference in her since then. The care and support she has received there have been incredible. The support team is not only professional but also very kind and encouraging. Hearing how much the team makes her feel understood and supported has been really comforting as I watched her slowly regain her strength. Would recommend this place for those whose friends and families are seeking help and support.Posted on Google![]()

The Dawn Fifty years of pain, twenty years of alcohol and drug abuse, six psychologists, four psychiatrists, three therapists, ten rehabs, a few nights in the lock-up, three overdoses and one attempt of the unthinkable. The end was nigh. I decided I had to get out of Sydney but I didn’t know where to go, but for some reason I started googling wellness and health retreats in Thailand. One caught my eye out of many so I reached out and rang The Dawn Admissions, advising I would get a call from the clinical director within the next day or so. Not 24-hours later I received a phone call from the director (Helen Wells), taking time to understand I was in big trouble and needed immediate support. Helen evaluated my situation. My condition was so poor and to this day I am convinced she kept me alive until it was time for me to travel to Thailand. I was so frozen in my own misery and anxiety that for me it took a herculean effort just to get to Chang Mai. When I got off the plane a lady from the support team picked me up and talked to me and set my mind at ease. Suddenly an easy kind of feeling came over me, hard to explain but tranquility, peace, placidity, could it be spiritual. I am a nonbeliever, drink, smoke, rugby, stubborn, quick to judge, impatient (sometimes). So, WTF just happened. That night, my first night at The Dawn I slept for the first night in years. I woke up crying and I can’t explain. Everything just felt right as if a reset button was pressed. One instrumental cog in this journey is Helen. I think maybe the fact that I wasn’t pushed to go to Thailand immediately gave me trust. I am not a stupid person (far from it) and with that and my mistrust of everyone makes me literally second guess everything. So, for me to go and hand over my life to someone was a huge-feat in itself. I started repairing and didn’t even know it yet. Helen was the first person out of all the so-called professionals that I had met in the last decade and a half to realize I had been completely misdiagnosed. A personalised program was devised and tailormade to my needs. 1. Group therapy sessions (imperative, knowledgeable and extremely professionally handled) 2. Yoga (enjoyed) 3. Sound Bowls (just watch the geckos on the ceiling- however soothing) 4. Gym Sessons (loved) 5. Pool Sessions (loved) 6. One-on-ones (paramount and incredible) 7. Food (pretty good) 8. Support Staff (nothing was too hard for them to help you with) 9. Sunday Excursions (Great Fun) ‘ 10. Nurses (competent) 11. Dawn Psychiatrist (educated at Harvard – knew what he was talking about) 12. Garden and Surroundings (always kept clean and tidy- surroundings were tranquil with a river flowing by – pretty good serenity) 13. Rooms (were good – you are not there for a holiday) I spent about four months there. I am still working on myself now but that big black dark cloud that loomed over me has lifted. Thank you, Helen for saving my life. Thank you to The Dawn and all the support people, nurses and therapists. If anyone is tossing up or can’t make their mind up where to go and are in the position of no hope, give The Dawn a call. Thanks, BenPosted on Google![]()

Last year, I reached out to The Dawn out of desperation. A close friend of mine was battling alcohol addiction and depression, and I was terrified of losing him. Today, he’s been sober for a full year. His mind is clearer, his spirit is stronger, and he’s back at work, rebuilding his life. I can’t thank The Dawn and their team enough. They didn’t just help him heal—they gave him a second chance. For that, I’ll be forever grateful.+1Posted on Google![]()

I arrived at The Dawn with many problems and very scared, there I was greeted by a welcoming and efficient team. During my stay there, I had access to trained professionals who helped me face all the battles against depression and anxiety. The support team, always very attentive to my needs, always ready to help me and to serve me. The therapists are fantastic and everyone, including those who did not attend me directly, was always willing to help. The environment was calm, full of peace, with holistic and physical activities that helped my mental health a lot. The meals, always balanced and delicious, were essential to end my eating disorder. I met a family there, not only of the employees, but also of the customers who were with me on this journey. I leave here very calm, knowing that today I achieved many positive changes thanks to The DawnPosted on Google![]()

The Dawn was there for me at a very dark time in my life, and I'm so glad I chose to go. I came for severe work burnout and anxiety and immediately felt understood, safe, and hopeful. They provided a standard of care I could not find in my home country. I planned for a 2 week stay but stayed 5 in the end, as the program was helping a lot. I benefited immensely from all elements of their program: the counseling, group therapy, wellness and massage, holistic elements, great healthy food, and the riverside resort atmosphere. My fellow guests felt the same and were extremely happy with their decision to be at the Dawn. Most extended their stays after arriving. I'm so grateful to the amazing staff here who took great care of me and gave me exactly what I needed to get back on track with my burnout and mental health.Posted on Google![]()

Struggling with mental health and addiction while living on a vacation island in Thailand isn't fun at all. I’d never felt properly diagnosed, and my anxiety was creeping into every corner of my life, especially work. Things were getting harder to manage. After diving into some online research, I found The Dawn. I reached out, and Nathalie from the admissions team got in touch right away. She explained everything to me with patience, answering every one of my (many!) questions. Deciding to spend a month there was a big choice—work commitments meant I couldn’t stay longer—but looking back, it turned out to be one of the BEST decisions I’ve ever made for my well-being. Thank you very much to the Dawn!!! From the moment I arrived in Chiang Mai, the warm and welcoming staff made everything so smooth. I was greeted at the airport and driven to The Dawn, where I got a full tour of the grounds: the relaxing pool, a spacious gym and wellness center, a little convenience store, the sleek library, meeting rooms, and a gorgeous dining area overlooking the river. After settling into my cozy room, I had time to relax before meeting the rest of the team and my peers. The team at The Dawn is incredible—professional, compassionate, and always there when you need them. The support staff were ready to listen and hold space for me, my therapist Albert was not only extremely knowledgeable but truly passionate, and the doctors and nurses were top-notch. Then, there’s the fantastic gym team, the skilled massage therapists, and the people working behind the scenes—cooking delicious meals, maintaining the beautiful grounds, and keeping the whole place running smoothly. You’ll meet peers from all over the world who truly understand your struggles. The treatment blends Western and Eastern approaches, giving you a holistic path to healing. Each day is packed with group sessions (where you gain valuable insights from peers), individual counseling, educational sessions on psychology, fitness classes (like yoga, pilates, gym workouts, walks, aqua fitness, pickleball, zumba), meditation, sound bowl sessions, and evening time for journaling, exploring emotions, and practicing gratitude and CBT. If you’re struggling, don’t hesitate to ask for help. It’s not easy to face your fears and deepest, darkest secrets, but the relief that comes with shedding that weight is worth it. Don’t expect to walk out fully “healed”—this is real work, and it requires vulnerability. But with the incredible team at The Dawn guiding you, you’ll be equipped with tools that, if you continue to use them, can set you on the path to your best self for the future. Just remember: from dusk till dawn, take it one day at a time, one step at a time.+3
Common Mental Health Disorders We Address
PTSD and Trauma
Trauma and PTSD can arise from one-time catastrophic events or prolonged adverse experiences. Without proper treatment, they may lead to depression, anxiety, and long-term behavioural challenges that affect daily life.
Anxiety
Anxiety disorders create overwhelming worry and fear that disrupt daily life. Situations such as work meetings or social gatherings may trigger panic attacks, and without support, anxiety often worsens and takes a toll on your wellbeing.
Depression
Depression brings persistent feelings of hopelessness, loss of interest and low self-worth. It is one of the most common mental health conditions and can become dangerous when left untreated, but it improves with therapy and wellness practices.
Executive Burnout
Executive burnout develops from prolonged stress, leaving professionals drained. Often unnoticed until it becomes severe, it requires intervention to address underlying issues and establish self-care practices.
Mood Disorders
Mood disorders, such as bipolar disorder, involve intense mood changes linked to many factors. If left untreated, they can cause loss of interest in daily life, lead to self-harm, and in severe cases, result in suicidal thoughts.
Insomnia
Chronic insomnia is often linked to mental health conditions or substance use. By addressing these root causes and making lifestyle and behavioural changes, sleep quality can often improve without relying on medication.

How Our Personalised Mental Health Treatment in Thailand Works
Your journey at The Dawn begins with a personalised treatment plan tailored to your specific mental health challenges and guided by our Treatment Roadmap. Together, we will work through carefully structured phases that stabilise your symptoms, heal underlying trauma, and equip you for sustained mental wellness.
Comprehensive Assessment
and Stabilisation
Weeks 1 to 2
We begin with a thorough psychological evaluation to understand your mental health history and current symptoms.
Our clinical team uses this comprehensive assessment to create a treatment plan specifically tailored to your unique needs and recovery goals.
If substance use is also present, we provide integrated dual diagnosis treatment to address both conditions simultaneously.
Managing Your
Presenting Symptoms
Weeks 2 to 5
Next, we focus on stabilising your condition and equipping you with practical skills to manage daily challenges.
Therapies include:
- Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to change destructive thought patterns
- Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) to improve emotional regulation skills
- Mindfulness practices to develop present-moment awareness and stress management
- Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) for treatment-resistant depression and other conditions (optional)
Your dedicated therapist will closely monitor your progress and adjust your treatment plan as your symptoms change.
Addressing
Root Causes
Weeks 5 to 12
This phase is critical for lasting recovery.
We explore and resolve the underlying trauma and adverse experiences that have contributed to your mental health condition.
Trauma-informed therapies such as Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TF-CBT) help you heal these deep-rooted issues. Clients who need dedicated trauma work move into The Dawn’s Trauma Programme, which has an eight-week minimum stay.
Is Our Mental Health Retreat In Thailand Effective?
A mental health retreat in Thailand is effective when its treatment meets accredited clinical standards and its results are measured. At The Dawn, we assess every client’s depression and anxiety on admission and again at discharge, using two clinically validated tools: the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and the GAD-7 anxiety scale.
| What we measure | % of clients who improved | % of clients who went from severe to mild or minimal |
|---|---|---|
| Depression (BDI) | 91% | 74% |
| Anxiety (GAD-7) | 85% | 73% |
Outcomes: The Dawn’s client records, 2022 to 2025.
A mental health retreat in Thailand at The Dawn lasts around 60 days on average, and programmes run from four to twelve weeks. Your treatment duration depends on several factors, including the severity of your mental health condition and how you respond to treatment.
If you are dealing with complex trauma, multiple co-occurring conditions, or severe symptoms that have made daily life unmanageable, a longer stay of approximately 90 days allows us to provide more comprehensive care and better prepare you for enduring mental wellbeing.
Once we complete your assessment, we will work together to determine the ideal treatment length for your situation.
The Dawn’s mental health retreat is for adults whose mental health condition has made daily life unmanageable and who need more support than weekly appointments can provide. It is also suitable if you are in a mental health crisis and need residential care to address both your symptoms and the trauma beneath them.
- You have tried outpatient therapy or medication adjustments without getting the results you hoped for, and you need intensive support every day of the week.
- You are using alcohol or drugs to cope with your mental health, and you need both conditions treated together through dual diagnosis treatment.
- You have recently been discharged from a psychiatric ward and need a calmer, supportive environment to continue your recovery.

Why Choose Thailand for a Mental Health Retreat
How Much Does a Mental Health Retreat in Thailand Cost?
A high-quality mental health retreat in Thailand costs between USD 10,000 and USD 20,000 for a month. This is approximately one-third of the cost of similar treatment in the UK and the US, and about half the cost of comparable treatment in Australia. The lower price point reflects the lower cost of operations in Thailand.
The exact cost of each mental health retreat in Thailand will depend on the centre’s accreditation, the qualifications of its clinical team and how closely your treatment is tailored to your needs.
What a One-Month Mental Health Retreat at The Dawn Includes
| Included | What you receive during a four-week stay |

Inpatient Mental Health Retreat vs Outpatient Therapy
An inpatient mental health retreat removes you from the stress of your day-to-day life and provides intensive support that outpatient treatment simply cannot match. At The Dawn, all aspects of your care, including therapy sessions, medical support, wellness activities, and peer community are available in one location, allowing you to focus completely on your mental health recovery without logistical complications.
Inpatient – Removes you from the environment that contributes to your mental health struggles, giving you the space to heal without constant stressors undermining your progress.
Outpatient – Keeps you exposed to the same stressful environment and relationships that contribute to your condition while trying to manage treatment alongside work and personal responsibilities.
Inpatient – Accelerates your recovery through intensive daily treatment combining individual therapy, group sessions, TMS, and wellness practices, helping you see improvements faster.
Outpatient – Slows your progress significantly with only weekly or bi-weekly sessions, requiring exceptional self-discipline to maintain appointments during your most vulnerable periods.
Inpatient – Provides convenient access to all services in one location, eliminating the stress of coordinating multiple appointments.
Outpatient – Requires you to coordinate care between multiple providers across different locations, adding logistical stress when you are already struggling to cope.
Inpatient – Connects you with others facing similar challenges through group therapy, reducing isolation and reassuring you that you’re not alone in your struggles.
Outpatient – Restricts you to individual appointments, missing the support that comes from connecting with others facing similar mental health challenges.
Frequently Asked Questions about our Thailand Mental Health Retreat
The quality of care at The Dawn meets the same standards as high-quality mental health retreats in the US and UK.
As Asia’s only CARF-accredited centre, we adhere to the strict guidelines for clinical care and safety that govern top-tier treatment centres in the US. This means we use evidence-based treatment methods tailored to your individual needs rather than generic treatment protocols.
Every client’s depression and anxiety scores are measured on admission and at discharge, so the quality of care is tracked rather than assumed.
This exceptional standard of care comes at significantly lower costs than comparable Western facilities, allowing you to invest in longer, more comprehensive treatment without compromising on quality.
The Dawn is considered one of the best retreats in Thailand for depression and anxiety. To show that this reputation is earned, we track every client’s progress. At our mental health retreat, 91% of clients showed measurable improvement in depression on the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and 85% showed measurable improvement in anxiety on the GAD-7, between admission and discharge.
Among clients admitted with severe scores, 74% reached mild or minimal depression ratings and 73% reached mild or minimal anxiety ratings by discharge. These figures come from The Dawn’s own client records from 2022 to 2025.
Many international health insurance plans cover a mental health retreat in Thailand, and The Dawn accepts insurance from leading providers worldwide. Coverage depends on the terms of your policy, so check with your insurer that it covers residential mental health treatment abroad before you begin.
You pay The Dawn directly and claim the cost back from your insurer. The Admissions Team supplies the documents your insurer asks for, including the treatment quotation and an itemised invoice on discharge.
Many clients find that even with partial coverage, the significantly lower costs of treatment in Thailand compared to Western facilities can make a comprehensive mental health retreat more accessible and affordable than local options.
Language is not a barrier at The Dawn’s mental health retreat in Thailand, because all therapy sessions and daily activities take place in English. Your therapists are certified in the UK, US and Australia, so you can speak openly without a language barrier. Most clients come from the UK, US and Australia, which creates a familiar cultural environment for your recovery.
