Detoxification is not a requirement for all drug users before starting treatment, however long-term use of addictive substances can cause physical dependence. Physical dependence occurs when our central nervous system becomes tolerant to a certain type of drug. It is usually linked with benzodiazepines, such as alprazolam and diazepam, and opioids, such as opiate prescription drugs and heroin. Prior to receiving treatment, all of our clients undergo a medical assessment that determines whether they are physically dependent to drugs and require drug detox in Thailand.

What are the benefits of inpatient drug detox programme in Thailand?

While going cold turkey is a way to leave addiction behind, it should be done in a monitored environment with medical assistance. Inpatient drug detox provides 24/7 medical and psychological support since the person resides at the facility. Withdrawal from some addictions can have lethal results if the person does not have the right medical support. With some substances, the body may require pharmaceutical assistance and medical monitoring to relieve symptoms.

A structured inpatient programme allows the client to focus on themselves for the entire duration of their stay, which not only removes negative influences but also occupies their time in more productive ways. Cravings are also dramatically reduced during inpatient detox because the person does not go home at the end of the day, thereby removing the ease of relapse. Inpatient detox offers many opportunities to try a variety of therapeutic options such as reiki, meditation, and massage.

What is detox and why is it needed?

Detox is a controlled withdrawal process that allows the body to eliminate the drug while dealing with withdrawal symptoms. It is the initial phase of many recovery programmes, which is then followed by appropriate addiction treatment. The requirement for detox depends on several factors, such as the clients substance abuse history, medical issues, and age. The need for medical detox is determined through a pre-treatment assessment that is handled by The Dawns highly experienced detox specialist.

What are detox withdrawal symptoms?

Withdrawal symptoms largely depend on the type of drug, though most withdrawals involve physical discomfort, angst, mood swings and intense drug cravings. Detox from certain drugs can be more hazardous than others, such as benzodiazepines in comparison to heroin or other opiates. Detoxification from benzodiazepines can cause life-threatening seizures, while opiate withdrawal symptoms have less severe health risks, especially when the person is monitored by professionals.

Is medication required?

Clients who have abused drugs severely may be given medication for a certain duration to encourage the body to function like normal again, manage severe symptoms of withdrawal and treat any medical complications should they occur. Stabilisation is a vital part of any detox programme, in some cases medications that mimic the effects of the drug are prescribed to normalise withdrawal symptoms. The medication is then gradually decreased during the detox programme.

What should you expect during drug detox in Thailand?

Symptoms vary from person to person and largely depend on the specific drug they abuse and the severity and duration of their use. During The Dawns drug detox programme, each client is monitored by our medical team 24/7 and necessary steps are taken to ensure the best withdrawal possible.

After a certain period without drug use, long-term users tend to experience a variety of physical and psychological symptoms of withdrawal. The brain and body functions require a certain amount of time to return to proper functioning without the use of the drug. This period of adjustment can cause numerous withdrawal symptoms. Treatment duration varies on several factors, though an approximate duration can be given after assessment.
